Grenada gearing up for Test match cricket

In the distance in the photo above, Grenada’s international cricket venue can be seen. It used to be called New Quneen’s Park when it was just rebuilt. I think now they call it the Grenada Cricket Stadium….but don’t quote me on that!

From April 21 – 25 this year, England will play the West Indies in a Test match for the first time ever. It is well known that the English…and indeed the British, love Grenada. They also follow their team to the Caribbean, with Barbados normally the popular choice. The Test match afterwards is in that island so I am sure they have booked a two centre holiday.

The island is happy because they know what it means for hotel bookings, taxi drivers, restaurants and more. Advertising started from January. Homeowners are being encouraged to rent out spare rooms and apartments, similarly to what was done when Grenada hosted matches in the 2007 Cricket World Cup. Back then, if I recall correctly, the homeowners did not see the numbers they were promised. With this tour though, I think it’s safe to say the numbers are guaranteed.

Grenada will prove to be a great cricket destination for an England tour. If that is the case, hopefully it will host many more high profile matches.

Have you booked your ticket and accommodation yet? Better hurry!
